I wanted to capture Prince's spirit in this painting, so I started by collating articles about his life, achievements, contributions and setbacks to create a holistic bird’s eye view on the life of this icon, as well as sheet music to ‘Purple Rain’ and my favourite album covers.
Then came selecting the perfect painting medium. After much trial and error, I landed on charcoal and oil paint. Sure, it took longer to cure than acrylics, but the end result was worth the wait. It's like the difference between waiting for your favorite song to come on the radio versus blasting it on your own sound system - the quality is unbeatable.
After countless hours of work, I finally felt like I’d nailed it. The painting was complete, and I couldn't wait to share it with the world. But, before I could do that, I had to take it to the printers to digitise so that we could produce massive print sizes for his fans (I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been asked to make statement sized pieces). And let me tell you, the end result is amazing. You'll feel like Prince himself is staring back at you from your wall!
